Digital regulatory compliance: combine DIGITAL-2026 and Interreg Euro-MED
The innovation sector sees two funding windows that can converge within the same project strategy. Digital solutions for regulatory compliance can be integrated with thematic tests promoted in the Mediterranean. The two calls are the Interreg Euro-MED 2021-2027 programme and the European call DIGITAL-2026-AI-DATA-10-COMPLIANCE from the European Commission.
Why digital solutions for regulatory compliance help territorial uptake
The DIGITAL-2026-AI-DATA-10-COMPLIANCE call funds projects that develop data- and artificial intelligence-based digital tools for regulatory compliance. The national allocation available is 1 million euros, with grants covering up to 50% of eligible costs, and submission deadlines set for 1 October 2026 and 30 October 2026 for Italian applicants.
The Interreg Euro-MED programme instead requires experimenting with already mature solutions in Mediterranean territories. The programme has an overall allocation of 20 million euros and offers grants of up to 2 million per project. Partnerships should count on 8-12 partners and last up to 24 months, focusing on the “A Smarter Mediterranean” and “A Greener Mediterranean” Priorities. Interreg funding is designed for territorial replication.
The two lines fund different phases: development and testing at territorial scale.
How to combine the two calls to maximise impact and scale
A project can start from a digital regulatory compliance solution funded by the DIGITAL-2026-AI-DATA-10-COMPLIANCE call and then enter a territorial experimentation via Interreg to demonstrate replicability. The European call covers development with up to 50% of costs, while Interreg can provide up to 2 million to test adoption across multiple regions. Combining the calls allows moving from prototype to real-scale demonstration.
This pairing requires the solution to address at least one of Interreg’s specific objectives. Strengthening research and innovation is foreseen (OS 1.1). Supporting the circular economy and resource efficiency is foreseen (OS 2.6). Protecting nature and biodiversity is foreseen (OS 2.7). Applicants must map how digital regulatory compliance supports one of these missions: Sustainable Innovative Economy, Natural Heritage, or Greener Inhabited Areas. The choice of mission guides partnership composition and project narrative.
Practical choices, risks and deadlines for founders and innovators
Founders must build a partnership that includes technical expertise, local authorities and Mediterranean partners to meet Interreg requirements. Deadlines are tight: 1 October 2026 for the DG CONNECT application and 2 November 2026 for the Interreg call. A shared calendar among partners is a necessary condition to apply.
On the critical side, overlapping timelines and co-funding rules can complicate financial management and reporting. Replicability requires local adaptation that is not always foreseen by the original project. The strategic choice remains feasible: fund development with the European call and use Interreg to demonstrate the solution in real Mediterranean contexts.
