Anthropic: internal Claude use at list price tops staff spend
Anthropic wrote a figure relating to April 2026 in its listing prospectus. The value of internal use of Claude exceeded the monthly spend on staff. That figure excluded the shares assigned to employees. The document was filed on October 26 and runs to 335 pages. The value is calculated at the list prices Anthropic charges its customers, not on the real cost of computing.
What the Anthropic IPO listing prospectus reveals
The revelation concerns a comparison between two cost items. On one side there is the value of internal use of Claude. On the other there is the monthly spend on staff. In April 2026 the first exceeded the second, according to what is reported in Anthropic’s listing prospectus. The comparison excludes the shares assigned to employees, a significant item in the compensation of a pre-IPO company.
How to read the figure: list prices versus real costs
The methodological point is decisive. Anthropic measures internal use at list prices, the same ones it applies to external customers. It is therefore not a comparison between cash spent on artificial intelligence and salaries paid. The prospectus does not indicate either the real cost of computing or the April dollar figure. The spend on staff instead includes salaries, bonuses, benefits and contributions, while shares remain outside the comparison. In other words, the revelation measures the economic value of adoption, not the cost incurred by the company to generate it.
The growth of internal use and the shift of work
The dynamic is the most relevant part. The prospectus indicates an increase between January and September 2026, always at list prices. The value of internal use of Claude rose by more than 250 times. Over the same period, programming work shifted in large part to the model. In September, more than 90% of the code added to the company’s software was written by Claude. Revenue per employee is growing faster than the headcount, which stands at about 5,300 people.
The reason is openly stated in the document. Anthropic uses Claude to build the successive versions of Claude. The model makes teams more productive and helps improve future models.
Customers, valuation and the risk according to Forbes
The prospectus also captures the customer base. More than 11,900 customers spend over $100,000 a year, more than 1,900 exceed one million, and about 250 reach ten million. The company comes to the markets after its $30 billion round in February, closed at a valuation of $380 billion.
Dependence, however, has a downside. According to Forbes, entrusting Claude with a growing share of the work that determines its quality is itself a risk. The tool that generates revenue is also the one on which the construction of future models rests.
What remains to be verified in the next reports
The prospectus does not disclose the actual cost of computing. Nor does it give the April dollar value of internal use. The quarterly reports that follow the listing will show whether the ratio between internal use and staff cost keeps rising. They will also show how much it really costs to generate that use compared with list prices.
